The surgery, headed by the Chairman of the Sheikh Zayed hospital Amir Raza, was carried out by a team of doctors including Dr Tariq Bangash.
The 12-hour long transplant was done on a resident of Sialkot, Amir Raza.
The liver transplant centre at the Sheikh Zayed was inaugurated a year ago by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) with the total cost of Rs400 million.
Before this, India was the nearest place to get the transplant done from.

While the credit for the first liver transplant should go to the team headed by Dr Tariq Bangash, it should also go to former Chairman Dr Anwaar A. Khan who made it all possible by conceiving and spearheading the project during six years that he headed the institution. Cutting through the bureaucratic sloth to get various approvals for setting up the project was indeed an accomplishment. In fact, he is the one who took pains to contact and to convince the present team of doctors, who worked in different countries at the time, to return home to serve humanity. The bottom line however is that the nation justifiably takes pride in the performance of the devoted men and women who made the first liver transplant a success.”
