Pakistan 10th most failed state: index

The US-based magazine Foreign Policy, has ranked Pakistan 10th on the Failed State Index, 2010.

WASHINGTON: The US-based magazine Foreign Policy, has ranked Pakistan 10th on the Failed State Index, 2010.

The list comprises 177 countries, and is topped by Somalia, Zimbabwe, Sudan and Chad.

India is ranked 87, while China comes in at 57. Norway is ranked at the bottom of the list.

The magazine says Somalia has been the number one failed state for three years running, and none of the current top 10 have shown much improvement.

It says altogether, the top 10 slots have rotated among just 15 unhappy countries for the past six years.

The Foreign Policy magazine index ranks Pakistan 8.1 on demographic pressures, 8.9 on refugees and IDPs, 8.9 on human rights and 9.3 on external intervention.

pk_hellhole | 13 years ago | Reply Happened to visit Karachi and Lahore recently - these are true hellholes. People especially women have limited freedom and pursue a perverted religion. No wonder it is a failed state

Hamood | 13 years ago | Reply The bottom line regardless of what naysayers like the misfit guy think, Pakistan never appeared on such lists until a few years ago when the so-called War on terror began next door and destabilized us as well. With NATO looking for ways to escape from Afghanistan, the region will be gradually stabilized.

Failed are those people who are running this country . LONG LIVE PAKISTAN .......... People who says that its failed state must remember that pakistan will be the country from where ISLAM will florish.

Failed states dont have the 6th largest military in the world. Failed states dnt have the one of the best intelligence agencies in the world (ISI).. Saim Saeed Tanauli | 13 years ago | Reply Who believes in this index or what foreign policy states? this index has been created by them to keep third world countries and other progressing nations in a constant state of turmoil and uneasiness...they publish such material and try to prove their superiority that they are the most pious among other nations...US itself is the most challenged and failed nation as far as their foreign policies go...they think they can dictate anything and people will take it at its face value...that time is now gone !!! we should keep our eyes and ears open and not let other countries decide our fate through these failed indexes...we should be able to account for ourselves and prove our own worth to the world !!!

The US was a stable democracy with no insurgencies, private militias, religious extremism, or rotating dictatorships ever since its Constitution was ratified in the 1780s.

You happen to disagree with the article? "China is the 57th and India is the 87th?" China ranks low because it is an authoritarian regime which is a major factor in this index. "Last I checked India had more insurgencies going on than Pakistan but it is even ranked better than China?" Yes but they are not quite as violent as the ones in Pakistan and also India is a much larger country. Also they don't have problems with IDPS/refugees, economic decline, deligmitization of the state (of which the Taliban is doing),or external intervention. "I just laugh at such reports." Then why are you on here commenting angrily? "Unfortunately, living in the United States, my tax dollars are probably going to the authors of such reports." Foreign Policy is an well respect news source as well as being private. Please do not yell, kick, and scream just because you don't like what is being published.

In fact it is “US-biased” magazine Foreign Policy which has ranked Pakistan 10th on the Failed State Index, 2010. As a Pakistani, I think my country is doing fine. What one can expect from a country in 63 years comparing to a more than 250 old country which took independence from United Kingdom. Any thing which is published in the US-based magazine does not mean that it is a version from a Holy Book.

USMAN MIR | 13 years ago | Reply This is a failed index. Pakistan is world's most resilient state.It has gone thru. pressures that would have broken other countries in days. The 2.5 million plus refugees of SWAT is the latest example. Quote any other country where such huge number of refugees were back in their area in less than a year.It was clear example of achievement our country can have when army undertakes action backed by 17 million people. All these reports have their own agenda which normally is far from truth. We must focus on building our country according to our objectives & not what these silly reports try to portray.

Please read 'Failed States,' by Noam Chomsky (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/25/books/review/25freedland.html) and you will get the idea of failed state. Its all b* . If definition of failed state is applied correctly , all country are failed states , and No.1 is United Stated of America. This is not my opinion ,but of Noam Chomsky.
