KARACHI:

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the police claimed on Thursday to have arrested two robbers involved in the biggest heist of the year reported in Karachi thus far, during which a worker of a construction company was deprived of prize bonds worth Rs30 million on Jamshed Road.

The SIU later produced the suspects, Naveed Ahmed and Farhan Ahmed, before the East judicial magistrate at Karachi City Court, seeking physical remand.

The court granted the police four-day physical remand of the two suspects.

According to the police, the suspects were attempting to flee the city with prize bonds worth Rs25m, but the bid was foiled when they were at the inter-city bus terminal on MA Jinnah Road.

The police said Ahmed was the leader of the gang that committed the heist and had distributed prize bonds worth Rs500,000 among his accomplices.

Search for other suspects involved in the robbery, identified as Arman alias Nomi, Aqeel, Ayan, Naushad, Owais, Fazal, Rehan and Ali, is underway.

The robbery took place on April 5 and the case for the heist was registered by the Jamshed Quarters Police. The investigation of the case was then assigned to the SIU.

Initial investigation has also revealed the connivance of some of the employees of the said construction company in the robbery, SIU SSP Haider Raza told The Express Tribune.

Besides, he said the arrested suspects had confessed to also depriving a doctor of prize bonds worth Rs1.4m and stealing gutka worth Rs2 million in New Karachi few days ago.

Naveed and one of his accomplices, Mazhar, were sent to jail for 13 months for the latter, the SSP said, adding that while Naveed had been released, Mazhar was still serving his jail term.
