SHC rejects murder convict’s appeal for acquittal

KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court rejected on Monday an appeal for acquittal filed by a man convicted for murder.

A two-member bench, comprising Justice KK Agha and Justice Abdul Mobeen Lakho, commuted the death sentence awarded to the convict, Fazal Mehmood, to life in prison.

A trial court had sentenced Mehmood to death and imposed a penalty of Rs200,000 on him after convicting him for the murder of a citizen.

The police had maintained that Mehmood hit a man named Raziullah on the head with a brick, killing him, during a clash in 2015.

Separately, the same bench issued notices to the Sindh inspector-general of police (IGP) and other relevant authorities over a set of pleas seeking the recovery of missing persons.

The petitioner’s counsel apprised the court that a citizen, Amir Anwar, and others have been missing for a long time. The counsel appealed to the court to ensure the recovery of missing citizens.

The court issued notices to the Sindh IGP, Sindh Rangers director-general (DG), the provincial home department and other relevant authorities, seeking their replies by May 11. The bench directed the relevant authorities to recover missing persons and submit a report.
