The North Nazimabad, Karachi Police claimed on Monday to have arrested a man accused of falsely identifying himself as a policeman and snatching a motorcycle from a citizen.
The police registered a case against the suspect, Kamran, on state’s behalf.
A video of the suspect snatching a motorcycle near Five Star Chowrangi went viral on social media. In the video, bystanders said the suspect identified himself as a policeman and had in his possession a weapon and motorcycle with a police registration number plate. They said he was accompanied by an accomplice and both of them fled after they were handed over to the Hyderi Police.
Taking notice of the incident, the West DIG ordered an inquiry into the matter. He constituted an inquiry committee and assigned the inquiry to Gulberg SP Azhar Mughal.
According to Central SSP Malik Ghulam Murtaza Tabassum, investigation revealed Kamran was not a policeman.
The SSP said Kamran had a Police Qaumi Razakar card that used to convince people that he was a cop. His arrest by the North Nazimabad Police was confirmed by SP Mughal.
He said the motorcycle bearing the police registration number plate found in Kamran’s possession was stolen from New Town in 2012.
