‘Three Lyari gangsters, two robbers’ arrested

Rangers spokesperson says detained gang war members part of extortionist group

The Sindh Rangers and police claimed to have arrested two suspected members of a robbers' gang and three extortionists associated with the Lyari gang war in separate operations. The suspects were handed over to the police along with the weapons and ammunition confiscated from their possession, said a Rangers' spokesperson on Wednesday.

According to him, three members of a most wanted extortionist group were arrested in joint-operation of the paramilitary force and police in Lyari.

The Rangers spokesperson said that the suspected extortionists, identified as Muhammad Kamran alias Mama, Usman and Usama, had dropped an extortion chit at the shop of a local trader, Danish, in the jurisdiction of Baghdadi Police Station on February 7, 2021. He added that the extortionists called Danish on the phone to demand money and later shot him when he failed to pay the extortion amount.

He said that during interrogation, Kamran alias Mama had admitted to being associated with notorious Lyari gangster Jameel alias Changa. The other two extortionists are associated with Lyari gang war's Wasiullah Lakho group, he added.

According to the spokesperson, Kamran alias Mama joined the Lyari gang war in 2007. Kamran is accused of extortion, murders and causing injuries to several people during exchange of fire with other groups. Besides, the spokesperson added, Kamran engaged in drug dealing and replaced an SHO for not cooperating with him.

He was also involved in several encounters with the police and Rangers, said the spokesperson, adding that Kamran injured several persons during an attack on Haji Mureed Goth in 2012, killed Shahid alias Lamba and his two accomplices near Rexer Lines in 2013 and shot dead two citizens in Old Golimar area in 2014.

Moreover, the spokesperson said that three robbers, identified as Muhammad Farhan and Ahmed Abdul Sattar alias Rameez, were arrested in a separate intelligence-based operation in Orangi Town. The suspects are members of a gang of thieves, involved in several robberies, snatchings and other street crimes, he added.

The spokesperson maintained that during initial interrogation, Farhan and Sattar had confessed to looting over Rs97,000 in cash and over 20 mobile phones in separate robberies. He said that the suspects have been arrested and imprisoned before as well for their involvement in different robberies and possession of illegal weapons.

The arrested suspects and their accomplices recently snatched Rs7,000 and three mobile phones during a robbery at a hardware and paint shop in Orangi Town electronics market on February 9, said the spokesperson, adding that the arrests were made with the help of the CCTV footage of the incident, in which Farhan and Sattar can be seen.
