ISLAMABAD:

Hours after Supreme Court's decision in the presidential reference case concerning the Senate polls, Vice President Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Maryam Nawaz remarked that the Constitution is supreme and is greater than any 'nefarious design'.

"It is proved once again that the Constitution is far greater than the references and ordinances based on the deceit and malicious intent of the vote thieves," Maryam said in a Twitter post on Monday.

Now, she added, those embarrassed [by the top court's verdict] are raising a hue and cry regarding the use of technology [in the polls].

"Remember, now no RTS or Daska fog technology will work," she said, and asked, "why be scared of the power of the vote".

Earlier today, in a much-anticipated decision on the Senate polls presidential reference, the SC announced that Senate elections should be held through secret ballot under Article 226 of the Constitution.

However, in its opinion, the top court stated that the ECP was empowered to take all measures to curb corrupt practices under Article 218(3).

The decision was taken with a 4-1 majority. "Secrecy is not absolute," the decision added.
