‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ teaser: Alia Bhatt delivers her best performance yet

The actor's 'Mafia Queen' is a force to be reckoned with

The teaser of the highly anticipated Alia Bhatt-starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi released yesterday on the occasion of filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 58th birthday.

Based on a chapter from Hussain Zaidi's book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai, the film revolves around a woman named Gangubai, a brothel owner and matriarch from Kathiawad, who was left with no choice but to swing destiny in her favour. The film will feature Bhatt in a role she has never essayed before and fans of the star have been looking forward to her performance in Bhansali's upcoming directorial.

The teaser sees Alia giving her best performance yet as her fierce expressions, feisty dialogue delivery, and ferocious acting overpowers everything else. Her demeanour in the teaser gives nothing but chills, and leaves everyone – including those previously criticising her for Sadak 2 – wanting for more.

Packed with trademark Bhansali visuals, dramatic background music, stylised frames, a touch of allure and dialogues that hit the nail on the head, the teaser has fans hitting the replay button, according to the Times of India. Soon after the trailer released, Twitter also flooded with first-hand reactions.

Besides calling it Alia’s ‘best performance’, many even declared Gangubai Kathiawadi a ‘blockbuster’. Even Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif couldn’t help but laud the execution. “I always look forward to your work as an actor ‘little one’,” wrote SRK. “And this one seems extremely special....and you....so Gangsta!!! All my love and wishes for the film.”

Kaif took to her Insta stories and wrote, “Incredible! Can't wait to watch this @aliaabhatt. The master craftsman Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magic again!”

Gangubai Kathiawadi marks the first collaboration between Bhansali and Bhatt. It is touted to be the prior’s biggest project to date. Expected to be nothing like cine-goers have ever witnessed before, Gangubai teaser celebrates the journey of a girl who becomes the voice for women everywhere.

The film’s poster was shared on Bhansali Productions Twitter handle ahead of its teaser. The poster was captioned, "Fiery and feisty, she's ready to reign! Celebrating the man, his vision and 10th directorial, #GangubaiKathiawadi, in cinemas on July 30, 2021."

The film will reportedly also feature appearances by Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi and Huma Qureshi. Gangubai Kathiawadi is was scheduled to arrive in theatres on September 11, 2020, but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
