KARACHI:

Tensions heightened on Monday on the campuses of the University of Karachi and Institute of Business Administration after an IBA student reportedly physically assaulted a KU professor.

KU teachers staged a protest outside the IBA campus on Monday, boycotting exams that were to be held on the day, and demanded of the IBA administration to condemn the incident.

The trouble began reportedly at 5:33pm on Saturday when KU Assistant Professor Mustafa Haider sounded the horn of his vehicle indicating for IBA students to move aside.

According to KU teachers, the students misbehaved with Haider, and entered a heated altercation with him.

The squabble quickly escalated with the students and security guards of IBA physically assaulting the KU professor alleged the protesters.

When contacted and asked whether any action was taken against the student after the CCTV footage surfaced implicating an IBA student, the varsity's spokesperson, Haris Tauheed, said that the student has been identified and they will inform the media about subsequent details.

Meanwhile, IBA Director Akbar Zaidi and KU Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Iraqi met later on the day to discuss the matter.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Dr Iraqi said that the private varsity has taken the matter seriously and IBA's disciplinary committee is investigating the matter.

"The IBA Karachi strongly condemns any misconduct against teachers by any member of society… The matter has been forwarded to the IBA disciplinary committee for necessary action.

We will also invite a senior professor of the Karachi University to be part of this disciplinary committee," read a statement issued by the varsity on the day.
