Filing of nomination papers for Senate elections in full swing

So far, 80 candidates have submitted nomination papers; process to continue until Monday

ISLAMABAD:

The filing of nominations papers for the Senate elections continued on Sunday, with some 80 candidates applying for the coveted slots so far.

On Saturday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced to extend the date for submission of nomination papers for the March 3 Ssenate polls till February 15 (Monday), saying the decision was made to facilitate the candidates.

Today, in Peshawar, Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) candidate Shazia Tehmas and the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) Dost Muhammad Mehsud filed their nomination papers.

Similarly, in Lahore, PTI's Aon Abbas and Malik Zaheer Abbas submitted their application for candidacy in the polls.

Others who have submitted their nominations include PTI's Shibli Faraz, Sania Nishter, Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, Fozia Arshad, Zirqa Taimoor, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Saleem Mandivalla, Sherry Rehman, Farooq Naek, Pervez Rashid, Taj Haider, Mushahidullah Khan, Kareem Khawaja, Abbas Afridi, and Farhatullah Babar.

On Friday, the PPP expressed its reservations on the schedule of the Senate elections, deeming it difficult to file nomination papers within two days.

The party had said that it feared that the candidates will have to stay separated from the elections due to the process being incomplete.
