Pindi to celebrate Basant despite Punjab govt ban

The Rawalpindi Police busted four kite-sellers who had made different groups on a social media platforms selling kites and recovered kites and chemical strings from their possession, a spokesperson shared on Sunday.

As the Basant festival is approaching, kite-selling has increased in the city despite the Punjab government’s ban on selling and flying. The official shared that police gathered information and traced the location of a kite-selling group running a social media page that sells equipment to selected customers.

He mentioned that the leader of the group along with some of its members identified as Shahrukh, Amir, Ashir, and Yasir were booked while police recovered more than 5,000 kites and 25 chemical strings from their possession.

The official added that the police were conducting raids to book the remaining members of the group.

Enthusiasts set to mark Basant

The Kite Association has announced a Basant Festival and Basant Night in Rawalpindi despite the ban.

The officials from the association said that Basant would be celebrated in the garrison city on February 26 while the Basant Night will be held the night before on February 25, which will start after sunset and continue till midnight.

Rawalpindi-Islamabad Kite Association officials Muhammad Iqbal and Niaz Ahmed told The Express Tribune that the festival would be celebrated with full zeal, adding that the preparations for Basant have been started while all kite-flying enthusiasts have been informed about the event.

They further stated that they have stocked kites and strings for the upcoming festival as delivery to customers will start in the first week of February.
