Fallen yet not forgotten: Icons who passed away in 2020

As the year comes to an end here’s a look back at the stars the world lost during the past 12 months

2020 would always be remembered as the most tragic year of the 21^st century.  With a pandemic in full swing, more than 1.7 million people died across the globe from coronavirus complications, with the number rising by each day.

While not necessarily linked to the pandemic, the year also saw the passing of several entertainment icons from all cultural corners of the world.  Hollywood, Bollywood and the Pakistani entertainment industry, all three witnessed the death of multiple figures that left a lasting dent. As the year comes to an end here’s a look back to the fallen yet not forgotten stars the world lost during the past 12 months.

PAKISTANI SHOWBIZ

The country saw the passing of notable figures from both then and now this year. From legendary TV host Tariq Aziz to up and coming supermodel to Zara Abid, Pakistan experienced the sudden loss of celebrities from all walks.

Tariq Aziz

The 85-year-old Neelam Ghar host breathed his last in June this year after being rushed to a private hospital in Lahore on Tuesday. He then passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest.

In his last and cryptic tweet from yesterday evening, Aziz wrote, " It seems as if time has paused and life has stopped. I've been lying in this bed for so many days and thinking what a blessing the freedom of movement itself was."

Zara Abid

Zara Abid was one of the passengers on the ill-fated PIA flight PK 8303, which crashed in a residential area of Karachi back in May this year. The 28-year had been route Karachi from Lahore upon the death of a family member.

Amanullah

 

Legendary comedian Amanullah had been suffering from many ailments for the pst several years, including kidney and liver failure. In March he left for his heavenly abode at the age of 70.

HOLLYWOOD

Countless celebrity deaths were seen in Hollywood in 2020. Countless celebrity deaths were witnessed, including those that left a lasting imprint globally.

Chadwick Boseman

 

Black Panther film star Chadwick Boseman, an actor whose work celebrated African-American pioneers and culture, died at age 43 after a four-year battle with colon cancer in August. It was recently announced that Boseman will be honored as Hero for the Ages at the MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time.

Sean Connery

Sean Connery will be remembered first as British agent 007, the character created by novelist Ian Fleming and immortalized by Connery in films starting with "Dr No" in 1962. PHOTO: AFP

In October Scottish film legend Sean Connery, who shot to international stardom as the suave, sexy and sophisticated British agent James Bond and went on to dominate the silver screen for four decades, died at the age of 90.

Eddie Van Halen

 

Eddie Van Halen, the pioneering guitar player whose hard-rocking band emerged from the Sunset Strip music scene in Los Angeles in the early 1970s to stand at the top of rock ‘n’ roll for a decade, died of cancer in October this year. He was 65.

BOLLYWOOD

The entire year has been chaotic for the Indian film industry. Amidst all the chaos, Bollywood lost multiple known figures that held a special place in the heart of fans.  

Sushant Singh Rajput

 

Sushant Singh Rajput’s death will forever be remembered as one of the greatest tragedy not just in Bollywood but India as a whole. Ruled as a suicide, the passing of Rajput sparked controversy all across that ended up gaining a political dimension. With drugs and nepotism becoming the major talking points, the entire episode became less about the poor soul and more about the media’s witch-hunt of Bollywood.

Irrfan Khan

 

Bollywood A-lister Irrfan Khan has passed away at 53, in April this year. The actor was recently admitted in the ICU after colon infection. His wife Sutapa Sikdar and two sons were said to be with him when he passed away.

Rishi Kapoor

Rishi Kapoor passed away at the age of 67, less than 24 hours after Khan breathed his last. Kapoor Bollywood veteran Rishi Kapoor has passed away at the age of 67, less than 24 hours after acting legend Irrfan Khan breathed his last.
