Mexico eye Formula One return
Hermanos Rodriguez track being touted as possible location for the event.
MEXICO CITY:
A Mexican entertainment company hopes to bring Formula One races back to Mexico after a two-decade hiatus.
Carlos Slim Domit, an FIA member and sponsor of the country’s automobile association, who is working with the CIE company to promote the return of the event, confirmed that the proposal is being given serious thought.
“It’s being studied,” said Domit, who added that the Hermanos Rodriguez track in Mexico City could be one of the locations for the races.
Mexico has hosted 15 races but discontinued in part because of their high price-tag. FIA President Jean Todt also hinted that Formula One could return to Mexico but did not provide any details. “Today Mexico has a strong economy and I’m convinced that in the future this will be possible,” said Todt. “There are a series of criteria that need to be met for the event, most importantly security [on the tracks].”
