Pakistan People Party (PPP) chairperson Bilawal Bhutto has paid glowing tributes to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto on the eve of her 13th death anniversary and said the slain PPP chief faced oppression, character assassination, and imprisonment with valour and empowered the suppressed groups and classes.
"Benazir Bhutto has been a daughter, a sister, a wife, and a mother and a role model ruling the hearts in the Islamic world. History will feel her loss for centuries," he said in a message on Saturday.
"She is no more among us physically, yet she is present as a power that keeps the democratic forces united and is a guiding light for the party leaders and members."
According to Bilawal - who become the PPP chairperson after Benazir's assassination on December 27, 2007 - Benazir not just inspired women, but also united the entire nation and led with valour in her struggle for human rights and the restoration of democracy.
"Her vision exists in the form of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)," he added. "You can chain a person but not a vision. You can exile a person but not his concern. You can murder a person but not his thinking."
Enumerating her contributions to the country, Bilawal said Benazir helped Pakistan get ballistic missile technology and strengthened the national defense. She also gave ownership land rights to women farmers and established the First Women Bank as well as women police stations.
"[Her contributions range] from introducing the anti-polio vaccination and creating livelihood opportunities to struggling for the fundamental freedom of the public. She devoted every single moment of her life to the nation, and for working for poor citizens, youngsters, children, and women," said Bilawal.
The PPP chief said "black powers" ultimately assassinated her through a conspiracy, yet they could not win.
Bilawal vowed to render every sacrifice, and continue the struggle to achieve the mission of PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.
He also urged the party workers prepare for a big movement for restoring the true democracy and making the public completely independent with the supremacy of the parliament and Constitution.
