ABU DHABI:

Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) agreed to develop an institutional mechanism to strengthen bilateral relations and promote cooperation in various fields and regional issues.

The agreement came during a meeting between Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and his UAE counterpart Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi.

"Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates have deep, historic and fraternal ties and the UAE has always supported Pakistan in the hour of trial," Qureshi told his UAE counterpart.

The foreign minister stressed that 1.6 million Pakistanis living in the UAE had been contributing to the UAE's development for many decades.

"The Pakistani community in the UAE has played a pivotal role in promoting contacts at a public level between the two countries," the foreign minister added.

He apprised his counterpart of the difficulties being faced by the Pakistani community in the UAE and stressed the need for their early resolution.

The top diplomats also discussed the positive progress made in establishing peace in Afghanistan. Qureshi said Pakistan was committed to continuing its sincere efforts for peace and stability in the region, including the Afghan peace process.

The foreign minister also apprised his counterpart of the deteriorating security situation in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Foreign Minister Qureshi also assured his counterpart of active participation in the Expo 2020. Both sides agreed to continue consultations on issues of mutual interest.

He appreciated UAE's support to Pakistan and the rest of the world during the Covid-19 pandemic. Qureshi also invited his counterpart to visit Pakistan, an invitation he gladly accepted.

A day earlier, Foreign Minister Qureshi reached Dubai on a two-day official visit and called on Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The foreign minister conveyed warm regards of Prime Minister Imran Khan to Sheikh Mohammed, who is also the ruler of Dubai, according to the Foreign Office statement.

The UAE premier warmly reciprocated the sentiments, it added.

FM Qureshi exchanged views with the UAE prime minister on a range of issues of mutual interest and discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation between the two brotherly countries, possibilities of enhancing bilateral trade relations and promoting investment, in particular in the field of agriculture.

“The foreign minister also discussed matters pertaining to the welfare of Pakistani diaspora in the UAE,” said the communiqué.
