No medals for Pakistan in Incheon
Pakistan pugilists will return home empty-handed from the Asian Confederation Boxing Championship after their last two survivors – Amir Khan and Yasir Javed – faced defeat in their quarter-finals to end the country’s involvement in Incheon, South Korea.
In the first setback of the day, Khan went down against India’s Balvinder Baniwal in the 64kg category. According to the organisers, the Karachi-based Khan lost valuable energy due to unnecessary attacks while Baniwal achieved accuracy, an approach that gave him a 28-11 victory.
In the second match, Javed lost to Iran’s Mohammad Nouripour in the 91kg bout after Mohammad Waseem, Nisar Khan, Usman Butt and Arshad Hussain suffered losses in the early stages.
With the first Olympics qualifiers – the World Boxing Championship – just a month away, the performance comes as a major setback.
Besides a bronze medal for Waseem in the President Cup last month, none of the boxers have won a medal in several competitions.
