Five women, two children die in Parachinar roof collapse

Roof caves in during wedding ceremony; at least 40 injured and 50 others rescued from rubble

In a tragic incident, five women and two children were killed while more than 40 sustained injuries on Wednesday when the roof of a house collapsed during a wedding ceremony in Parachinar's Pivar area.

According to rescue officials, as many as 100 people were attending the event, out of which around 50 have been saved during the rescue operation in which two ambulances, disaster vehicle and 25 personnel took part.

Rescue 1122 officials said that most of the injured were women and children who have been shifted to a local hospital.

On March 5, 16 people died and dozens of others sustained injuries when a five-storey residential building in Karachi's Rizvia Society collapsed.

An FIR, citing negligence, damage to private and public property and deaths due to the incident was lodged in the presence of area representatives at the local police station.

On September 8, at least five members of a family and a guest died and four others were injured when the roof of their home collapsed.

The victims were asleep in their house when the building, that was in a dilapidated condition, collapsed. They were trapped under the debris.

Data compiled by Punjab Emergency Service (PES) Rescue 1122 available with The Express Tribune showed that at least 140 incidents of building collapse and 254 of drowning emergencies were reported in Punjab during August.

The Rescue 1122 report further revealed that the highest number of cases of building collapse was reported in Lahore and Faisalabad. In Lahore 18 and in Faisalabad 14 buildings collapsed.
