RAWALPINDI:

The classes for different programmes at Kohsar University Murree will begin from February 1.

This was decided in the meeting of the university’s syndicate preside by Punjab Higher Education Minister Raja Yasir Sarfraz.

Kohsar University Vice Chancellor Nadeem Abbasi and MNA Sadaqat Abbasi attended the meeting along with other members of the syndicate.

Establishment of three new departments, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Food Sciences and Forest Studies, was also announced in the meeting.

Sarfraz said that the university will be known for its Tourism and Hospitality Department being run at par with international standards, adding that it will rise among the ranks to be listed among the top universities.

MNA Abbasi claimed that the previous government deliberately kept the people uneducated, sharing that the varsity was now autonomous to make its own decision after the formulation of relevant laws and regulation.

He vowed that the university will maintain high standards in delivery of quality education, adding that the colleges in the region will be affiliated with the university. He assured that no hike in tuition fee will take place for the current year.

Abbasi shared that apart from the new departments, the university will offer degrees in various humanities and science disciplines as well. All resources of the Punjab House will soon be transferred to the varsity and a purpose-built campus will be established stretching over 86 kanals, he added.

MNA Abbasi told The Express Tribune that the university will have a separate department for tourism studies. Students would be at the most popular tourist spot of the country and therefore they would not face any kind of problems in their practical projects, Abbasi said.

He added that the establishment of the institution would also open opportunities for higher education for students living around the area. The lawmaker said that the university would have hostels for the students coming from other areas of the country.

The notifications regarding the establishment of three new universities in Rawalpindi district including Potohar University, Information Technology (IT) University and Railway University would be issued within the next three months, the MNA asserted.

Abbasi added that the development work for up-gradation of the 60-bed Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital in Kahuta to a 100-bed hospital has been kicked off after the chief minister released funds for it.

The MNA said that the project would be completed in two phases with the addition of 20 beds in each phase. Under the project, the construction of new wards on the adjoining land to the hospital has also been started, he added.

Further, another Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) from ruling PTI, Raja Sagheer, confirmed to The Express Tribune that the outpatient department (OPD) and operation theatre (OT) of THQ Kahuta were being upgraded.
