KARACHI:

The Sindh Home Department announced on Wednesday a reward of Rs5 million for helping arrest the killers of prominent cleric Maulana Adil.

According to Express News, a notification to this effect was issued by the home department. The recommendation to fix a prize money for the arrest of the cleric's murderers came from the provincial counter-terrorism department (CTD).

Maulana Adil Khan, the administrator of Jamia Farooqia seminary, was gunned down along with his driver in Shah Faisal Colony last month. The attackers, on a motorcycle, opened fire at him and his driver Maqsood, fleeing the scene afterwards.

On October 16, a protest against the murder of prominent religious scholar Maulana Adil Khan was held in Karachi after a 48-hour ultimatum to the police for the arrest of those responsible for the assassination lapsed.

The call for the protest was issued by the Karachi Ulema Committee (KUC), which had also called for a complete 'wheel-jam' strike in the metropolis. However, the KUC assured that the protest would be peaceful.

On October 14, the Shah Faisal Colony Police registered the FIR of the cleric on behalf of Shah Faisal Colony Police Station SHO Inspector Sikandar Khan.

The case was registered under Section 302 (pertaining to murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

Maulana Adil's assassination had earned widespread condemnation with Prime Minister Imran Khan and the army chief both terming it an 'Indian' attempt at fanning sectarian violence in Pakistan.

The premier said that India had been attempting to target religious scholars from both Sunni and Shia sects to create sectarian conflict across the country.
