Airline pilots in Pakistan have expressed deep concern over up to 44% cut in salary, which has aggravated their hardship and might lead to flight safety issues.
In a statement on Saturday, Pakistan Airline Pilots’ Association (PALPA) spokesperson requested the government to act immediately and resolve the issue of 44% - 25% recent and 19% previous - cut in pilots’ salaries.
“Without prior notification, deduction in gross salaries of the pilots is unjustified and will lower the already rock bottom morale of the community, which is demoralised and under severe pressure due to stressful and draconian working conditions,” he said. “This situation is a grave risk and may potentially compromise flight safety.” Despite the Covid-19 outbreak throughout the globe, pilots have been working day and night for the progress and reputation of the national carrier and ensuring all possible services to the passengers, he said.
He lamented that five months had passed since the airline resumed operations and now salaries of pilots were being slashed by a further 25-30%. He pointed out that the management of Pakistan International Airlines Corporation Limited (PIACL) deducted salaries of employees in violation of the directions of Prime Minister Imran Khan who instructed businesses not to cut salaries in the wake of Covid-19.
