The families of police officials killed or injured between 2019 to 2020 thus far have complained of difficulties in collecting compensation or medical expenses from the police force.
Around 25 families of Karachi police officials, who were either martyred or injured since 2019, have not been paid any monetary compensation and the Sindh police welfare department, which has functioned smoothly in the past 10 years in this regard, appears to have no answers, according to sources.
The said families are met with excuses when they visit the welfare department at the Central Police Office.
Sources quote the families as being told that distribution ceremonies have not been possible due to the coronavirus pandemic, but compensation will be paid soon.
The families lament that senior officials make promises of monetary awards for the families of injured or killed policemen but the directives are not implemented. They have resorted to taking loans to meet expenses as a result, they add.
These complaints against the police welfare department are a new occurrence, having seldom - if ever - been raised in the past decade.
