ISLAMABAD:

President Arif Alvi strongly condemned on Sunday the assassination of Shaykh-ul-Hadeeth Maulana Adil Khan, who was gunned down in Shah Faisal Colony in Karachi a day ago.

Condoling the death, the premier expressed deep sorrow and regret over the incident and said that "enemies of the country will not succeed in their nefarious designs against Pakistan and the killers will soon be brought to justice".

In reference to the scholar's assassination possibly igniting a sectarian strife, the president said that unity and harmony were the need of the hour.

Sympathising with the family members of Maulana Adil Khan, the president prayed for the departed soul and wished the family strength to bear the irreparable loss.

Earlier today, the funeral prayers of the religious scholar were offered at the Jamia Farooqia, Hub River Road by his brother Maulana Obaidullah Khalid.

Well-known religious scholars including Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani, Mufti Muhammad Rafi Usmani, Maulana Hanif Jalandhari, Senator Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Maulana Rashid Soomro, Jamia Banuria Mufti Noman and Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman were in attendance.

The deceased was buried in the vicinity of his father Maulana Saleemullah Khan’s grave in Jamia Farooqia.

Following Maulana Adil's assassination, Prime Minister Imran Khan had also issued a strong condemnation, stating that for the last three months, India has been attempting to target religious scholars from both Sunni and Shia sects to create sectarian conflict across the country.

"Condemnable targeted killing of Maulana Adil of Jamia Farooqia in Karachi this evening. My govt has known & I have repeatedly stated this on TV, since last 3 months India's attempts to target kill Aalims from Sunni & Shia sects to create sectarian conflict across the country," the premier wrote on his official Twitter handle hours after the tragic incident.
