Social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram have been under fire for mishandling user data and hence face increased pressure from watchdogs to make their platforms safer.

In 2018, Facebook reported that personal data on as many as 87 million users was improperly shared with British political consultancy Cambridge Analytica.

According to the Ponemon Institute, trust in Facebook took a 66 per cent plunge in 2018 however, no need to worry as there are social media platforms still available where users can interact with their friends and family without the fear of their data being stolen and stored on huge servers.

WT: Social:

WT: Social, founded by Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia, is a platform that is news-focused and free from advertisements that do not rely on algorithms to fill in top stories and clickbait stories.

The platform relies on user donations to operate an advertisement free social network. Since its inception, the site has received more than 200 individual donations. According to Wales, the new generation of consumers are willing to pay for content they think is valuable.

Another thing that sets the new social media platform apart is that the most recent link will be posted first rather than one with the most likes as on Facebook or Twitter.

Sociall:

Sociall is a new platform similar to other networks with standard features such as create posts, follow others, and discover new content however, what sets it apart is its privacy policy.

The company strongly believes in user privacy and does not track your online activity to curate your content. And we don’t sell your data to third parties.

The network has strong privacy features to keep your posts as private as you want with top-notch security that prevents search engines from indexing your profile.

Further, the network uses blockchain technology, hence there is no single place where information is stored thus making it difficult for hackers to access and corrupt the data.

Users of Sociall are able to moderate the site to remove spam or posts that go against the community guidelines.

Vero:

Vero is a social network where users come together as a community and share whatever they feel like with whomever they want without being bothered by advertisements.

The platform is completely different from Facebook, where the latter needs user data in order to make money from them.

Vero does collect some usage data which is used to see how often the app is used, but note that this option by default is off unlike Facebook where they have everything turned on and you have to go into your settings and turn them off.

The app is free from data mining and algorithms making it a safer app to use.

Yubo:

Yubo is a social networking app designed that does not track its users or throw in ads after every ten seconds.

The platform is transparent about its data collecting activities and the privacy policy is easy to understand with terms and conditions laid out for the users.

Members can create live sessions with up to 10 different streamers and an unlimited number of viewers. On the main page of the app, you can search for live streams based on topics. There’s also the option to follow your favorite streamers so that you always know when they go live.

Yubo is aimed at users between the ages of 13 to 25 and in order to safeguard young users from communicating with people over the age of 18 the platform separates members into two communities.

Ello:

Ello is an online social networking service created by Paul Budnitz and Todd Berger in March 2014 with the aim to provide users an ad-free alternative to existing social networks.

The platform is similar to a Pinterest-like website showcasing art, photography, fashion, and web culture and embraces all types of users.

The platform grew in popularity as Ello presented itself to the world as a “Facebook killer social network” which doesn’t push ads down its users’ throats and doesn’t sell peoples’ information and data to 3rd parties.
