The graveyards of Jhelum city have no space left and people are recycling old graves to bury the dead. Civic circles have demanded the district administration to purchase land area for new necropolis.
During a survey of various graveyards of the city, people told The Express Tribune that it was hard to find a decent grave for their near and dear ones in the main cemeteries of the city.
Whenever a new grave was dug, bones pop up from the ground indicating that someone was previously buried there. “We are recycling old graves, particularly those over 20 years old to accommodate new arrivals,” said a gravedigger refusing to give his name fearing reaction from people.
The population of the city has increased over years but the administration did not allocate a new site for a graveyard nor expanded the existing ones, Amjad Ali a resident of Ahmedabad area of the city.
