LAHORE:

A writ petition was filed in Lahore High Court (LHC) challenging the price hike of medicines by pharmaceutical companies.

Petitioner Nadeem Sarwar contended the court that the drug regulatory body gave approval of increasing prices of medicines in two phases.

On December 31, 2018, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) issued a notification for price adjustment of 889 medicines.

Out of these medicines, the prices of 395 were reduced whereas prices of 463 medicines that fall into hardship category were increased by up to 200 per cent based on their cost of production and formula prices.

The second notification was issued by DRAP on January 10, 2019 for regular medicines according to which all the drugs registered with the regulatory body were allowed to increase their prices by 8% and 15%. The petitioner requested the court that direction be issued to respondent (DRAP) to bring the medicine prices at par with government prices.
