A police official and at least two robbers were injured when they traded fire as accomplices of a car thief attempted to free him from police custody. Cantonment police on Sunday said that they had arrested a suspected car-lifter, identified as Rashid Ali, near Chakri Interchange with the help of the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP). A case for car theft was also registered. The police were in the process of shifting the suspect and the stolen vehicle to the station when accomplices of the suspect launched an attack on the police squad on Railway Station road. In the ensuing exchange of fire between the police and assailants, ASI Zeeshan and the car-lifter suffered bullet injuries. One of the suspects, who came to free the car lifter was also injured and arrested by the police. Police officials said that the complainant was with the police squad but he remained safe during the incident. The injured were rushed to a hospital. They hoped that once they can question the suspects, they would give up actionable information about their accomplices and the extent of their operations.
