The provincial government on Thursday approved projects to build a flood protection wall in Hangu apart from a safe city project in the Hayatabad locality of Peshawar among 13 projects at an estimated cost of over Rs10.16 billion.
The projects were approved during a meeting of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP), which met with Additional Chief Secretary Shakeel Khan in the chair. It was attended by members of the PDWP and officials of the relevant departments.
The forum approved 13 projects pertaining to multi-sectoral development, urban development, water, transport, sports and tourism and agriculture sectors.
Amongst the schemes approved in the multi-sectoral development sector was a poverty graduation, youth employment generation, community development support and socio-economic infrastructure enhancement project under the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) assistance project for rural economic transformation
It also approved a project to clear liabilities of contractors, and pay compensation in the merged districts, including liabilities of contractors for solarization in South Waziristan district.
The meeting also okayed the integrated development in Arang, Barang and Mamond, Salarzai areas of Bajaur district.
In the urban development sector, the forum approved a project for waste disposal in major towns of the province.
The forum also approved the Hayatabad Safe City Project, rehabilitation of sewerage, solid waste treatment plants in Peshawar and the divisional headquarters.
Under the Peshawar uplift programme, the meeting approved schemes for the improvement of traffic congestion in various areas of Peshawar.
In the water sector, the meeting approved the construction of flood protection walls, irrigation channels, and the installation of irrigation tube wells in the union councils (UCs) of Daoba, Darsamand, Torawari, Naryab, Naryab-ii, Thall urban, Thall rural, Karbogha Sharif and Dallan in Hangu district.
A project approved for the transport sector would see the establishment of the first Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering Unit (TPU) of the province.
Other schemes approved in the sports and tourism sector included a project to upgrade the football ground at Qayyum Stadium in Peshawar. Moreover, it approved the establishment of two sports stadiums in Peshawar.
The forum also approved the establishment of the Swat Agriculture University.
