The Rawalpindi district administration has launched a crackdown against workshops and factories established in the residential areas, sealing one such slaughterhouse on Tuesday.
The locals of over 200 houses in the Ferozpura area were forced to migrate to other localities due to the round-the-clock air and noise pollution and the foul smell emitting from the abattoir.
Residents said the action followed a report published in The Express Tribune on nuisance caused by factories set up in houses in residential areas. City Assistant Commissioner (AC) Ahmed Sohaib kicked off the action by sealing a slaughterhouse established at a residential building in Ferozpura.
The district administration officials said that the Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anwarul Haq had taken notice of the report published in The Express Tribune raising the matter of public interest. He issued directions to all ACs to carry out action against commercial establishments in the residential areas in their respective jurisdictions.
The locals of the Ferozpura neighbourhood said that stench caused by offal and blood had made life miserable. “We could not breathe in the fresh air due to the odour rising from the abattoir,” a resident of the area said.
