140 incidents of roof collapse reported across Punjab in August

The heavy monsoon rains wreaked havoc across Punjab and resulted in an average four roof collapse and eight drowning incidents daily in August.

Data compiled by Punjab Emergency Service (PES) Rescue 1122 available with The Express Tribune showed that at least 140 incidents of building collapse and 254 of drowning emergencies were reported in Punjab during last month.

The Rescue 1122 report further revealed that the highest number of cases of building collapse was reported in Lahore and Faisalabad. In Lahore 18 and in Faisalabad 14 buildings collapsed due to rainfall. Besides, the most drowning emergencies were reported in Gujranwala where 13 people died in 20 cases.

As many as 18 cases of drowning in which seven lives were lost were reported in Sialkot, 16 in Rawalpindi in which seven people lost their lives, 15 in Attock in which five people died, 11 each in Muzaffargarh, Bahawalpur and Kasur in which six, 12 and seven lives were lost respectively.

Four people lost lives in eight drowning cases in Faisalabad, six in nine cases in Sahiwal, four in eight incidents in Rahim Yar Khan, five in eight cases in Bahawalnagar, two in seven cases in Mianwali, two in five cases in Chakwal, one in five cases in Hafizabad, three in six cases in Lodhran, one in five cases in Mandi Bahauddin and five in seven cases in Sheikhupura.

As many as 10 cases of drowning each in Multan and DG Khan were reported in which five and six lives were lost respectively. Out of these deaths 14 people lost their lives due to drowning in drains. Two men drowned in drains in Lahore, four in Rawalpindi, one in Faisalabad, one in Multan, three in Gujranwala, one death in Sahiwal and three deaths in nine incidents in Sialkot in sewerage drain drowning incidents were reported.

Rescue 1122 promotions raise eyebrows

The analysis of data showed that the highest number of roof collapse incidents was reported in Faisalabad where 27 people were injured in 18 cases followed by the provincial capital Lahore where 11 people died and 39 were injured in 14 incidents. In Chiniot one person died and 20 werr injured in 10 incidents.

In Gujranwala and Sialkot nine cases each were reported. Seven people were injured in Gujranwala and one died and 12 were injured in Sialkot.

At least three cases of roof collapse were reported in Rawalpindi, seven in Multan, six in Sargodha, two in DG Khan, seven in Rahim Yar Khan, two in Sahiwal, nine in Sialkot, three in Jhelum, one in Rajanpur, two in Khanewal, six in Jhang, two in Gujrat, three in Kasur, four in Toba Tek Singh, one in Mianwali, three in Bhakhar, four in Chakwal, one in Pakpattan, two in Hafizabad, one in Lodhran, four in Mandi Bahauddin, seven in Nankana Sahib, five in Sheikhupura and two roofs collapsed in Vehari during August.
