At least 10 bodies of citizens who had drowned to death in different nullahs and streams in the metropolis were retrieved on Friday, a day after at least 23 deaths were reported as record-breaking rainfall lashed the city.
Two men drowned in a deep pit filled with rainwater near the Liaquatabad post office on Thursday night. The body of one of them was pulled out of the water and shifted to a hospital by bystanders, while the second body was retrieved by rescue workers on Friday. The deceased could not be identified until the filing of this report.
In the meantime, the two-day-old body of an unidentified man was found from a nullah near Football Chowk, Hawkes Bay, while the body of another man, said to be around 27 years old, was found from the river near Korangi Crossing. The bodies were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital, respectively, for medico-legal formalities.
Moreover, the body of an unidentified man, said to be around 35 years old, was recovered from a nullah in North Nazimabad. The body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for medico-legal formalities.
Separately, a 14-year-old boy, Arshad, drowned in the rainwater accumulated in the underpass near Punjab Chowrangi. The body was shifted to JPMC for medico-legal formalities, after which it was handed over to the family.
Besides, the body of 14-year-old Khairullah was recovered from a pool filled with rainwater near Frere Hall. The body was shifted to JPMC for medico-legal formalities.
According to JPMC executive director Dr Seemin Jamali, the bodies of two more men who had drowned to death in a pool near Madina Blessing were also shifted to JPMC.
Furthermore, the bodies of two young men, Taimoor, 21 and another unidentified man, said to be around 20 years old, were shifted to JPMC as well. Taimoor's body had reportedly been found from a nullah near Manzoor Colony, while the other was retrieved from a nullah near Moon Garden, Gulistan-e-Johar.
Meanwhile, a teenaged girl, identified as 18-year-old Chanda, died of electrocution while switching on the water pumping motor at her residence in Qayyumabad.
In another incident, five people were injured as a result of mudflow caused by a landslide on a hill near Asghar Shah Stadium in North Nazimabad.
According to Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon, at least 23 people, including women and children, had died in different rain-related accidents, such as structural collapses and drownings, the previous day.
