RAWALPINDI:

A survey of the cantonment areas of Rawalpindi has shown that as many as 650 commercial buildings have been constructed without first getting their building plans approved, a report revealed on Monday.

However, the cantonment board has decided to launch an amnesty scheme for residential structures which were built before 2015 without approved building plans.

The report added that owners of all commercial structures, which were built without pre-approved building plans, have been sent notices to get their properties regularised at the earliest to avert action.

They have been warned that their structures will be sealed and even demolished should they fail to get their structures regularised.

Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Umar Farooq Ali on Monday said that they have decided to regularise the 650 illegal commercial structures which they discovered had been constructed without an approved building plan.

He added that should owners of these buildings fail to submit to the regularisation procedure, their properties will be sealed in the first phase and later they may even be demolished.

Ali further told The Express Tribune that the board has been implementing a zero-tolerance policy against illegal constructions within its jurisdiction.

Speaking about the amnesty scheme for illegal domestic structures, he said that all residential structures constructed without a building plan before 2015 will be regularised without any penalty.

Ali added that they have decided to end the role of building inspection officials from the entire regularisation process to save people from their alleged blackmailing.

Urging the public to cooperate with RCB and take advantage of the amnesty scheme, the chief executive officer said that the cantonment’s registered architects will design building plans against a fee of Rs2,500. These plans will be approved within just three days.
