Trans woman found dead in apartment

Police say further action will be taken after receiving the autopsy report

ISLAMABAD:

The body of a person who was transgender was found from their home in Sector G-11/3 on Monday morning, police said.

Ramna police said that they were called to flat 13 in the PHA Apartments complex by neighbours who had noticed an unusual stench emanating from the housing unit where Ejaz alias Gurriya lived.

When police opened the apartment, they found the body of a person inside. Officials said that initial examination of the site suggested that the body was around two weeks old and could not be visually identified. The body was shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) for an autopsy to determine the exact cause and time of death

“We will only be able to say something once the examination report comes back,” said Ramana police ASP Abdul Wahab who is leading investigations into the case.

Alleged killer of transgender caught

He said preliminary investigations show that the deceased had a drug addiction, though they will only be able to say something about the case after doctors submit their report.

Meanwhile, the transgender community in the federal capital on Monday demanded strict action against those responsible for Gurriya’s death. Nayyab Ali, a transgender rights activist condemned the alleged murder and said that it was the duty of the state to protect the lives of all citizens.

Ali said this incident and countless others like it serve as a reminder of the high cost paid for being "visible" in a transphobic society.

The activist said that the incident was the result of a lack of action taken in several other similar cases.
