Sindh cops remanded for ‘mistakenly killing citizen’

Policemen shot Aslam dead, injured Waqar on the basis of suspicion

KARACHI:

A local court handed over on Saturday three police officials, accused of killing a citizen and injuring another in an alleged encounter at II Chundrigar Road the previous day, to the police for five-day physical remand.

The South judicial magistrate was hearing the case at Karachi City Court, where the accused police officials, constables Imran and Sarfaraz and driver Imran, were presented before the court.

The investigation officer informed the court that a case had been registered against the accused under the sections of the Pakistan Penal Code pertaining to murder and attempted murder.

The court handed over the accused to the police for five-day physical remand.

On Friday, the police had shot dead 38-year-old Aslam and injured 26-year-old Waqar, on the basis of suspicion.

An eyewitness, on the condition of anonymity, told The Express Tribune that Aslam and Waqar were engaged in friendly conversation, with one among them tossing his mobile phone to the other, when the police van stopped by them.

As the law enforcers pointed guns at them, Aslam and Waqar raised their hands to proclaim their innocence, but the police opened fire on them, he narrated.

Mureed Abbas case

Another local court combined the case pertaining to the murder of anchorperson Mureed Abbas with a case pertaining to the possession of weapons and directed the accused, Adil Zaman, to appear before the Supreme Court at the next hearing under any circumstances. An additional sessions judge was hearing the case at Karachi Central Jail, where Zaman appeared in court.

The notice for the cancellation of his bail by the apex court was also received by the court.

The court directed Zaman to appear before the Supreme Court at the next hearing and combined the case pertaining to the possession of weapons with the Abbas murder case.

The hearing was adjourned until August 29, with the bench remarking that the accused would be indicted at the next hearing.
