PESHAWAR:

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government will promote sports activities at religious seminaries to provide theology students with healthy pursuits.

The provincial government has decided to set up a badminton court at Jamia Darul Uloom Haqqania.

The badminton court would be established at a cost of Rs9.3 million at the madrasah which was once associated with the name of Taliban.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Sports Department Director General Asfandyar Khan told The Express Tribune on Sunday that the government has decided to set up sports facilities at all madrassas across the province.

The decision was taken in the light of the directives of K-P Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, he informed.

Khan said sports facilities would offer opportunity for healthy activities to the students of madrassas.

The sports department would approach all madrassas having space enough where badminton or other sports facility could be set up, he added.

He further informed that sports facilities across the province is a top priority of the incumbent government and funds have been allocated for the purpose.

Sports grounds will also be established in all districts for people with special abilities, women, indoors gymnasium and squash courts in colleges.

The provincial government had recently started setting up an open-air-gym in the Peshawar Central Jail and also plans to establish such facilities in all jails across the province, the sports DG informed.

Earlier in 2018, Peshawar Zalmi, one of the six franchises comprising the Pakistan Super League, organised the first ever madrassa cricket league through its Zalmi Foundation in Peshawar August 28-31.

The Zalmi Madrassa Cricket League, which brought together 12 teams to compete on the cricket pitch, was aimed at promoting religious harmony and at entertaining students and locals.
