Over two billion mangroves have been planted in Sindh’s coastal belt, claimed provincial forests and information minister Nasir Hussain Shah on Monday, adding that the plantation process had been computerised in the province for the first time in Pakistan’s history. Meeting various delegations a day after announcing a monsoon plantation drive during a visit to Thatta, the minister said that large-scale mangrove plantation was an important initiative. He added that it would generate over Rs10 billion in revenue, which would be spent on the welfare of local communities. He further cited Pakistan Peoples Party chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as saying that Sindh’s mangrove production had nearly doubled since 2008 while province had set three world records for tree plantation.
