ISLAMABAD:

Irked by frequent protests, the administration of the largest tertiary care hospital of the federal capital on Sunday warned its employees of strict action.

A circular issued by the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) on Sunday termed such attitude and behaviour of the protesting doctors and other staff as illicit and immoral.

"Pims administration strongly believes in putting back on track the derailed system of healthcare management at the hospital. The obstacles and barricades being erected in the way will be crossed, pushed away or demolished soon," an official of the hospital said while quoting the management's policy letter.

It added that some people were engaged in defaming the institution by holding demonstrations and strikes even during the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic where the hospital has had to deal with a majority of the 14,023 cases in the federal capital and 10,645 recoveries.

"Becoming intolerant for the sake of a few rupees, leaving duty stations, leaving your patients in misery and taking out protests as proxies of failed individuals is not going to help in the long run," the letter warned, adding that the names of all troublemakers - who were involved in politics instead of thinking of the welfare of the patients - will be disclosed soon.

"You are soon going to lose the sympathy of the hospital administration too, which was hitherto stretched to the limits of tolerance and restraint," it warned, adding "Protests and processions at Pims must end.”

The hospital administration said that the only motive of the medical workers should be to serve humanity and take care of the sick, not leveraging disasters, capitalising on civil unrest. "At the hospital, it is about serving the ailing humanity and protecting lives. You are not serving the purpose of your life or your profession or your job if you are taking out protests, wasting time in uncalled-for agitations, grouping and barging every day into management offices and not letting the administration work for the welfare of critically ill patients or even the staff," the circular read. "Daily unrest and processions by health care workers at Pims, to whom the whole nation is looking at as their saviours, is not going to weaken the stance of hospital administration to build up the system from scratch, again,” it said, adding that they were aware of who was pulling the strings of the protesters.

"Less than half (0.5) per cent of individuals out of a 4,000 strong professional staff cannot brand the outside world's opinion about those running the show at the institute."

On the issue of pay raise for healthcare staff at the hospital, Pims administration assured that it is being processed by the health ministry.

Subsequently, it added that the unions, associations, and organisations were unlawfully taking advantage of the media attention and defaming their noble profession.
