RAWALPINDI:

A massive fire broke out at a junkyard in the Awaan market of Rawalpindi on Tuesday, Rescue 1122 officials said.

No casualties were reported while owners and workers estimated that goods worth hundreds of thousands of rupees had been lost.

Rescue 1122 officials said that they were called to a fire at a junkyard located in Awaan market on Tuesday. They added that upon arrival at the site, they saw the blaze spreading across the junkyard.

A Rescue 1122 spokesperson said that the blaze had become quite intense, due to which they termed it a category ‘A’ fire - the highest classification for infernos. He added that around 30 firefighters and eight tenders were called in to combat the blaze.

After toiling for a few hours, they managed to bring it under control.

He added that no casualty was reported in the incident but the blaze damaged the scrapyard and a section of the adjoining mosque.

Rescue teams said that they are unsure of how the fire erupted. However, witnesses said that the junkyard used to store plastic bottles, compressors and other odds and ends. They suspected that the fire could have erupted after one of the compressors - which contains electric capacitors and oil - exploded.
