Undoubtedly, we need to be out with the old and somehow get in with the new. The old and tarnished have to be rejected if politics and governance (which is what it is all about) are to get anywhere. We desperately need young blood. But it must be young blood with no baggage attached and sense in the upper storey.
The newly appointed foreign minister, child-bride of the foreign office, has made her historic trip to India. Just how did she represent Pakistan? By making a fashion statement and exhibiting questionable taste when representing a country in hock up to its shattered eyeballs, deep in debt to much of the world, with a sizeable percentage of its population sub-existing below the poverty line, with almost 100,000 families still bereft of permanent shelter after last year’s floods, with distress and distrust stalking the land, and a government said to be out of favour — even disliked — by the majority of its swelling populace?
She was elected to parliament in 2002 on the shoulders of her feudal family and faithfully served the government of general Pervez Musharraf throughout its tenure. She moved over from a failed party to the sympathy vote-winning PPP in 2008 and has now seemingly been rewarded, as the party co-chairman cum head of state is in favour (and rightly so) of promoting women in politics.
But is a Birkin bag, or for that matter anything to do with Hermes, representative of Pakistan? What has it to do with this country apart from the fact that a large bevy of begums with more money than nous possess one or several? The foreign minister herself reportedly has two — one large and very expensive black on show in India and, unfamiliar to the public, one tan. Did she have to flaunt the black, along with the other pricey accessories which have been calculated as having cost “upwards of $30,000 or 30 years worth of toil for the average Pakistani citizen”?
That’s fine that she has money, she can spend it how she likes, but it would be advisable not to brandish it when representing a near-failing country on the international stage — and particularly in India where rather than fashion statements we needed more, much more — definitely more than the somewhat anodyne traditional stuff she trotted out.
No one grudges the foreign minister her baubles, but let them be sported in the right places, in the plush salons of Lahore and Islamabad, in the Polo Lounge — at anytime other than when representing this unfortunate country.
Reportedly (and let it be denied) she is one of the 25 cabinet ministers in the disgraceful cabinet of the wooden, well-tailored dummy, Yousuf Raza Gilani who pays no income tax. Over the past years all she has, reportedly again, contributed to her country is agricultural tax of Rs7,500 per annum.
The danger is the example she has set. Our people’s representatives who now flop around the world at our expense will probably do their damndest to keep up with young Khar and jazz themselves up. Shopping bags returning to the country will multiply. As it is most of them have dyed hair (badly dyed), one exception being the turfed-out snappily dressed Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who went along with Mother Nature and thus looked far more normal, than his Cherry Blossom compatriots.
Those dabbling in foreign affairs would do well to read Anne-Marie Slaughter’s “The New Foreign Policy Frontier” published in the July 2011 issue of the Atlantic Monthly. (http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2011/07/the-new-foreign-policy-frontier/242593/)

It has also been reported that HRK does not pay income tax! Outrageous, isn't it?
how come you never noticed shah mehmood quraishi's expensive and dashy tailored suits yet unleashed on HRK for carrying branded stuff that she bought from her own pocket?
@ Syed Hussein El Edroos
My point is that her visit to India should be judged in terms of her role and performance as a Foreign Minister.
It makes little sense (other than being a display of personal animus) to talk about her tax status when one should be talking about her performance as a Foreign Minister.
If she is breaking a law on tax that should be investigated. I am not against that. Politicians have to be role models. It however is not a relevant point regarding her visit to India. It may be relevant to her Birkin but please let's not single out a woman politician for this topic as well.
Next time I will be checking our if our opinion makers focus on our Generals watches and tax returns ($10000 Rolexes, God forbid) when they are on their foreign trips. I suspect it will not comment on any such thing because society wrests all it's notions of honour and propriety in the persona of a woman.
@Syed Hussein El-Edroos:
Absolutely. Her income tax returns (or that of everyone who purports to represent us) is jolly well relevant. I can't believe that people still make such cavalier and absurd statements.
@Tilsim: I agree with most of what you have written. However I disagree that with your last sentence that "Hina Khar’s tax status is disappointing but irrelevant to her role as Foreign Minister". I think our leaders should be better role models.
With the amount of criticism being showered upon HRK, the writer and others in Pakistan want the young and fashionable Pak FM to be dressed-up in a simple cotton salwar kameez with hijab, holding a jute hand bag in her hands is quite an unacceptable norm. Madam in the present day world, majority of top diginitaries ie President's PM's, FM's etc keep fashion and hair-do consultants in-order to present a good image of their respective countries and especially so when visiting abroad.
Therefore, your argument that she represented a poor country and should have dressed accordingly does not hold good in the present times. However, the real focus should have been on her skills in handeling her job which she did reasonably well, keeping in view of her first and difficult assignment to India with no experience in foreign affairs.
Nice article. Ms Khar slipped up on this, if she's smart next time round she'll sport a Polly & Me or a Jafferjee's bag.
@Meekal Ahmed: Good day to you Meekal and thank you as always. Was actually a bit angry - but am happy you at least saw the humorous side to it all. But it is getting tougher and tougher to weed out the wobblies. Bye for now, AJ
HRK visit to India was a show of wealth, glamour and beauty, which we have won. This is not understandable by a poor and normal Pakistani who has never seen or heard about Birkin Bags and other branded products used by our Rulers, Jagirdars, Sardars and their families. No body has assessed and mentioned prices and makes of neckties, suits, shirts, watches and shoes of our Ministers and other dignatories. After all they have to represent Pakistan in other countries and impress their authorities, sometimes asking for loans and grants. This is the main cause of success of our foreign policy! Our Embassies in most of the countries are housed in splendid buildings, have a large staff with extra-ordinary facilities, but their performance for the purpose they are established is nearly nothing ie mainly to increase exports, to create a good image of the country, to search and attract investors and to facilitate visiting countrymen. The expences on these Embassies are very high and they are also given lot of funds to entertain the important personalities. If properly and honestly scrutinised many of these Embassies will have to be closed. If these embassies are working properly then visits of many Ministers and delegations will not be needed and many MOU and agreements may be negotiated and signed by them for which ministers are called and lunch and dinners are arranged. But now there will be a race of fashion and glamour and which Embassy organises more visits and offers more attraction will be examined. After all we are a rich country, ruled by rich people this is our plus point! Due to unusual behaviours of our Ministers we are not being taken seriously rather becoming laughing stock. Trend of ruling the country is to be changed exhaustively, Some think tank must come up from civil society to chalk out the ways and means..
err and you think shah mehmood querishi got his suits from tariq road? why werent people fuming over his expensive armani suits when he was FM?
Mr Web or whoever you are. Could you PLEASE at least do a SPELL-CHECK since asking you to correct grammar is a bit too much? Why do I have to read something three times to discern it's meaning?
Nice article. Hina is not going to think for herself or for Pakistan - many would say perfect for the job.
Ms Khar comes from a rich fudal family. It does not meen fhe is rich. The the wealth is her farthers. It could be articles given to her. So who are to critise her for making use of what she has. Did she bilk the government or the system. As far as taxes go, it is your tax system. So don't blame her for the failure of your system. She has projected a very positive posture for the foreign office in the deplomatic arena and to the world. So it is time to leave her alone and let her do her job to the best of aer ability. All these write ups can be a distraction. Find some one else to vent your dislike. May be your foreign minister or are you afraid of that?
At least I'll give HIna marks for not being a hypocrite! Our Indian policians - especially - the Sharad Pawars & Kalmadis (Maharashtra), the Lalu Yadavs (Bihar), the Reddys (AP), Karunanidhi & Sons (T.Nadu), Abdullahs ( Kashmir), and many others , all have billions in ill-gotten cash, gold and property, pay peanuts in taxes but yet strut about in Khadis, Chappals and Gandhian slogans!! At least Hina is not a liar!
Madam!
Another brilliant and HUMOROUS essay! And you said that the last one was the last one and I should expect nothing more!
I hope our wonderful compariots see the biting wit and humor. You are terrific!
best wishes.....
Love your style of writing. Enjoyed the article, lets have more.
Great !!! wonderfull ...l am agree 100%..well said "Cherry Blossom compatriots" ...fichissimo.. how said in Italian and in punjabi "thund pe gai"
I am at a loss to understand why everyone is not letting go of Hina Khar's Birkin! Honestly, it's fair to criticise her for being insensitive to public perceptions in her official capacity. Her expensive accessories gave ammunition to those who bash an aloof and parasitic Pakistani ruling elite day in and day out. However, it's not fair to go on and on about it and not to have an intelligent discussion about whether her overall persona has helped to achieve the stated purpose of her visit. She said at the outset that she wanted to change the hostile atmosphere in which these discussions are conducted. Judging by the reaction of the Indian media and Foreign Office it appears that she was successful in that aim. The Birkin seems to have helped rather than hindered. In fact, I would say she succeeded in changing the atmospherics when the similarly well attired Shah Mahmood Qureshi so spectacularly failed in Islamabad. This is an important achievement in it's own right given the level of suspicion and outright hostility that exists between the two countries post 26/11. The Indians under MMS have decided to reengaged with Pakistan in a positive manner and we have reciprocated in kind. She has done the first job required of a diplomat. So far so good I think.
Hina Khar's tax status is disappointing but irrelevant to her role as Foreign Minister.
Finally a well written article to define the actions of Khar. Her actions were not appreciated at all and Amina has written a wonderful piece.
