When Robert Pattinson said he would 'mindlessly hate' the 'Twilight' series

The Batman actor seems to have since accepted his past and looks back at his role with a bittersweet lens

Robert Pattinson has never been one to hide his disdain for the franchise that kick-started his Hollywood career as a lead - the late 2000s mega-hit Twilight series.

When the British looker landed the role of vampire Edward Cullen, he instantly became a fan-favourite with millions of admirers, however, the attention was hard to accustom to, as is evident from many past interviews.

An interview from back in the day when Breaking Dawn Part 2 was about to release was recently unearthed by The Hindustan Times in which Pattinson said he would have hated the films if he wasn't a part of them.

"I think I am a judgemental and cynical person who would just mindlessly hate it without having seen anything; I just think I’m a bad person," he had said.


In yet another interview with Vanity Fair, he mentioned how he particularly disliked being a part of something he didn't personally like. "There’s nothing you can do about it. That’s the way it is. But it is weird being part of that, kind of representing something you don’t particularly like."

That's not all, he had even talked about the girls that made up the majority of his fan base and gave him the success of a lifetime. "It does have an angle which is attached to something quite primal in girls. I guess people want it to define them, like, ‘I’m a Twilight fan.’ That’s crazy to me. I think people really just like being part of a crowd. There’s something just tremendously exciting about hyping yourself up to that level."

However, over the years as Pattinson has grown into his characters, and explore more avenues, he has also grown to look back with bittersweet memories.

Speaking to USA Today last year, he was quoted as saying, "It’s a fascinating second wave of people appreciating it, which is kind of cool. I think when anything becomes a massive phenomenon, there’s always people who get annoyed because it’s just everywhere. But now it seems like a retro thing: the soundtrack, the fashion. It’s like, ‘Oh, that’s so late 2000s.’"

“People come up and just have very fond memories of it. It’s a really sweet thing. I think the only scary part was right in the thick of it all, when it was very, very intense. Now the intensity has died down and it’s just very warm memories,” he added.

Currently, Pattinson is all set to be a part of two of the biggest releases in recent years - Christopher Nolan's Tenet and Matt Reeves' The Batman in which he will essay the role of the iconic superhero.
