Leading RJs urge government to save the radio industry

RJs Khalid Malik and Dino Ali believe that the medium could die if not given attention

Entertainment Desk June 05, 2020

Leading RJs Dino Ali and Khalid Malik recently took to social media to voice their concerns about the downfall of Pakistan’s radio industry. The two have highlighted how a policy shift is needed in order to save radio from imminent death.

Malik talked about how radio has evolved over the years into a medium that is accessible to all segments of society. "It’s not just about sitting in the car and turning a dial. It’s much more than that," he said.

"It is the only medium that is accessible to everybody. It is the medium of hope. It is the medium through which people come together, especially in times of hardship."

The RJ further appealed to both advertisers and the government to intervene in this regard. "During these uncertain times, I appeal to the powers to keep radio, to save radio and allow for radio to play its part in society."

"I also appeal to advertisers to see radio more than just a frequency or a dial. It is much more and it has come a long way, as it welcomes the digital age," he added.

Echoing his sentiments, Ali urged his fans to spread the word. "We need your help. The Radio Industry is going through a very serious time and we need everyone to help us get the word out to the right people. If you can share this poster on your Facebook profile/pages and Instagram and tag the concerned people at the top please," he said, sharing a poster listing the woes of the radio industry.

According to the poster over 100 radio stations have closed down in the country due to exuberant license renewal fees being charged by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

" The radio industry also desperately needs your (government) support to continue providing a much needed service to the nation, especially in these testing times. Your kind intervention is urgently needed to save this industry from imminent death," an excerpt from the poster read.
