A number of Bollywood films have been released that have done well in the market in 2011, yet the latter half of the year seems to have more than 50 per cent of the year’s most eagerly awaited films.
10) Mausam:
So what if the promos are downright boring? This film still earns itself a spot in the list by sheer virtue of the man at the helm of the affairs. Pankaj Kapur has finally decided to go behind the camera with this love story. And so what if he cast his son Shahid Kapoor opposite Sonam Kapoor? It really can’t be worse than the father-son collaborations like Koi Mil Gaya.
9) Mere Brother Ki Dulhan
Yash Raj Films may not be as big as it used to be, but Katrina Kaif is. And her sheer presence in any production is enough reason to go check it out. This one also stars Imran Khan and our own export Ali Zafar in a role that, going by the promos, holds some significance to the plot. Let’s just hope that the film has one.
8) Aarakshan
In spite of its jarring loopholes, Prakash Jha’s political saga Rajneeti had a genuine dramatic appeal. This one, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, is a take on the issue of reservation of seats in the education system and might just surprise audiences, like Jha’s previous film. The promo shows Saif Ali Khan getting enough scenes to ensure that he gets to revel in the role.
7) The Dirty Picture
Backed by Ekta Kapoor, the film chronicles the life of a B-grade actor. While Kapoor shrewdly catered to the masses with jarring cliches when handling her small-screen projects, her big screen ventures have mostly been those that defied convention. And with a stellar cast of Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah, this one is bound to raise eyebrows.
6) Ladies vs Ricky Bahl
The team of Band Baaja Baaraat is back with this rather fun-titled film that has Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh in the lead once again. Little else is known about the film that is slated for a December release, but let’s keep our fingers crossed in hope for another little film with a disarming appeal.
5) Agent Vinod
This one is first of the films which are expected to deliver the goods on some level, not only because it stars Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, but also because of the very intelligent man calling the shots. Sriram Raghavan, the maker of Ek Hasina Thi and Johnny Gaddar, is making an action-thriller this time around. There seems to be little that can go wrong with a team like this.
4) Rockstar
Starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri, who is half-Pakistani, this film is highly anticipated not least because it has AR Rahman as a musical producer. We have high hopes from this film; firstly, because it’s been a long while since Rahman got a musical to go gloriously wild with. And secondly, it’s from a film-maker like Imtiaz Ali, who gave us one of the most memorable love stories of the past many years with Jab We Met .
3) Bodyguard
Barring Dabangg, none of Salman Khan’s films from the past four years have been even remotely engaging. This film has him paired with Kareena Kapoor and is sure to become one of the biggest blockbusters, regardless of how bad the storyline is. But with Khan looking better than ever these days, we should never lose hope.
2) Ra.One
Hyped from the very day of its inception, this sci-fi flick is Bollywood’s claim to we-are-not-behind-Hollywood fame. Its first teaser featured little detail but fabulous action and effects, definitely promising a film that could define the year 2011 at the movies. Even if the film doesn’t, Akon’s “Chammak Challo” will.
1) Don 2
Why is this film the most anticipated of the year? Because it stars Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra. Because the first part was arguably the most fun Indian remake. Because the second part is original and Farhan Akhtar is always expected to deliver iconic stuff, simply because of his debut film Dil Chahta Hai. And because it has one of the best trailers of any film released this year.
But more than anything, it is because this is the only film on this long list that will please both the masses and classes, the public and the critics, the entertainment-hungry and the intellectual lovers of cinema.

Akhilesh, india First of all, I didn't know that they have problems between them. And secondly, I just prefer watching movies like many of my other friends; we like them as a character of a movie but seriously have no interest in their personal lives.
A reminder for all those having a problem with Pakistanis following Bollywood film: you guys are all following a Pakistani newspaper; more-so a Pakistani writer's opinion on Bollywood films. How mind boggling is that?
@Raj: Majority of Pakistanis hate India but love Bollywood. This is because Bollywood is dominated by Indian Muslim community, if it is today dominated by Hindu or other religions community then they will be hating Bollywood also.
We Pakistani-Americans love Bollywood. Keep it coming!
What does 2011 have in store for Lollywood?
@Secrecy
You are spot on about this guy @Akhilesh. He is so full of hate. Whatever the issue is, his manner of response is same. It is not about his religion or colour of his passport, it is all about his head and heart, ill-read and bigoted. Just for record's sake I am an Indian.
Only one comment is befitting this writers capability: He has good taste :p
Why is everyone fighting over a list of movies that the writer has rated according to his opinion and liking. go write your own article about these movies if its that much of an issue.
Good going Saim!!
oooh niccce! now i have a whole list of movies to watch next. thankyou author :)
To all cynical and Pakistani hating Indians posting here:
Pakistanis enjoy Bollywood just as they enjoy hollywood. That doesnt mean we are hypocrites or admire indian or american culture. Movies are just for entertainment, and hence we watch them for mere enjoyment nothing else. Btw Bollywood has long stopped showing indian culture unless your culture now is that of no clothes!!
Personally I am no longer a fan of bollywood now. All the new movies are complete crap. The Legends like Amitabh and Madhuri have gone and Bollywood could not find any replacement for them.
Akhilesh, India - Let me explain it to you, so far I haven't seen anyone saying that he is muslim that is why they watch his or her movie. Media Industry is not bound to anything actually the problem is that we will never be able to come out of our narrow thinking mindset (Not you but people from either sides). I have many friends from India and believe me we always hang around. Everyone please to have peace in the region we have to stop thinking negative.
Anyhow, as far Bodyguard the movie is concerned. Many people here in Pakistan like Salman Khan just because of his body and the actions he performs in the movie. (Personally, I don't like him).
Ewww.....Bollywood.....yuck *
Akhilesh, india - Just one thing that whenever I see your comment I always see hate in it? why is that? Personally, let me explain it to you I am a big fan of Amitabh Bachan and Akshay Kumar. So, please stop making these comments.
HA! This list will come bite you back when Bodyguard easily outgrosses your top 2 films.
Also, Kareena has 3 films in the top 5. Yea-yeahhhh!!
Mausam yeh awesome bara!!
Oh Please just remove this crap
I should have stopped reading this article when the writer called Koi Mill Gaya a flop and then called Yash Raj Films not bigger like yester years.. Please, get your facts right and then write about certain things.
i am just waiting for mousam why is it on number 10 i like the trailer so much n wait the mousam relese.
Pakistan's obsession with Bollywood is simply mind boggling. Isn't it ironical that Pakistan is the same country which denies it's Hindu past, contemptuously dismisses the composite south Asian culture and traces its ancestry to the Arab countries. For Pakistanis to be obsessed with Indian movies, which of course depict Indian culture, is terribly hypocrite. Well! Does anyone in Pakistan know as to how many movies will be released this year in your ancestral Arab lands? Any Guesses?
Mausam trailer is awsum Saim Sadiq.....if u find it boring....then u go n see Deshdrohi starring your loved actor KRK ...that you will find really entertaining...
You are obviously a biased Shahrukh Khan fan
Majority of Pakistanis hate India but love Bollywood.
i am waiting for mausam and i am from uk and why is it on number 10 because of its trailer.sorry man its trailer so good that indian cinema has never produce this kind of trailer.
I have no idea about Bollywood films. I just know I love the person who wrote this
How could you mr. saim sadiq! apologize honestly. all us friends are all excited for mausam. it definitely is the most awaited film of the year!
I never thought pakistanis are so much into bollywood stuff, days are not far behind that they will defeat Indian in Bollywood quiz. Even we don't know about upcoming movies.
