Sources at the hospital revealed that the management of Spencer Eye Hospital, which is the biggest eye hospital in Karachi and is run by the City District Government Karachi, was forced to close the operation theatre when its roof developed cracks, soon after the rains.
They added that many parts of the hospital’s building, which is very old, are falling apart due to lack of maintenance and repair work.
Spencer Eye Hospital medical superintendent Dr Anwer Saeed said, however, that the cracks and holes in the roof had already been repaired and operations were likely to resume in a couple of days. Around 500 patients visit the Spencer Eye Hospital every day, while around 30 eye operations are conducted in the hospital every week.
