KARACHI:
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) jointly donated over 52,584 pieces of body soaps, 145 litres of bleach, and 67 kilogrammes of chlorine to the Karachi Central Jail on Monday.

The organisations have extended their support to the authorities in Sindh to help control the potential spread of coronavirus in the province’s overcrowded prisons.

Thanking the ICRC and PRCS for their support, Sindh Prison inspector-general Nusrat Mangan said that the availability of bleach and chlorine would help disinfect the cells from inside as well as from outside.

Meanwhile, ICRC protection coordinator Anne Muller said that given the nature and the patterns of the coronavirus outbreak, the inmates and the jail staff were at high risk of contracting the virus in the enclosed spaces, adding that it was essential to take measures to prevent the spread of the virus there.
