Lawyers from Karachi to Kashmore expressed their anger on Friday over the targeted killings of four members of the legal fraternity this past week.
The National Highway was blocked for more than half an hour by the lawyers from the Malir Bar Association (MBA). They held a general body meeting where the killings were declared “terrorism against advocates”.
Members of the Karachi Bar Association (KBA) also organised a general body meeting and claimed that they felt insecure. Raging with anger, they told the elected bar members that anyone could be victimised by the killers and they would never get caught. Considering the anger and fear, the KBA managing committee and members announced a three-day protest till August 2. “We will be holding another general body meeting on Monday and will proceed to the Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) where we plan discuss our strategy,” said KBA honorary secretary Syed Haider Imam Rizvi. The association members also blocked M A Jinnah Road for about half an hour and staged a sit-in.
Some members of the association proceeded to the Model Colony graveyard where Faheem Riaz Siddiqui and Saleem Bhatti had been laid to rest. A floral wreath was laid at their graves on behalf of the association’s president and secretary. The Sindh High Court Bar Association announced that all Sindh High Court proceedings would be boycotted on Monday. A general body meeting is scheduled to be held at 10 am after which lawyers from all three associations plan to march to Chief Minister House in protest. “Killing lawyers is not acceptable,” said SHCBA president Anwar Mansoor Khan.
Lawyers all over the province boycotted the courts on Saturday.
