GILGIT: Two avalanches hit the remote Immit valley of Ghizer district in Gilgit -Baltistan on Saturday, blocking a major road as well as sweeping away various fields and trees.

“Thank God, there is no casualty reported in the incident,” Assistant Commissioner Habibur Rehman told The Express Tribune.

The first avalanche hit Adrakh village in Immit, where about 20 families reside, said Rehman, adding that the village is a hilly area situated above the agricultural nursery.

He said a Naib Tehsildar was sent to the area by the officials after it was reported that cultivated fields and trees have been destroyed by the avalanches.

Meanwhile, the community has been put on alert to avoid any further destruction.

Talking about the second avalanche, Rehman said it blocked the main road which will be opened as soon as machinery is mobilised for the same.

According to environmentalists, G-B has received unprecedented snowfall this year which may trigger more avalanches as temperature rises.
