In an unsurprising result, the general council of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz voted to elect the party’s eponymous leader as the PML-N president for the first time in 10 years, though party leaders tried – at least symbolically – to accommodate leaders who had hitherto been sidelined for failing to toe the party line.
Nawaz Sharif formally took office as the president of the party that bears his name after more than a decade, much of which was spent in exile in Saudi Arabia after being ousted by former President Pervez Musharraf in a military coup.
Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, the PML-N’s most prominent politician from southern Punjab, who went against party policy and voiced his support for a separate province in the Seraiki belt, has been appointed senior vice president, a position thought to be largely symbolic.
Senator Raja Zafarul Haq was re-elected as the PML-N chairman while the party got four new vice presidents: Syed Ghous Ali Shah from Sindh; Sartaj Aziz from Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa, Sardar Yaqoob Nasir from Balochistan and Sikandar Hayat from Azad Kashmir.
Senator Mushahid Ullah was made information secretary (spokesperson) after Senator Pervez Rasheed refused the post and Engineer Khurram Dastgir, a member of the National Assembly, was elected as his deputy.
Former party spokesperson Ahsan Iqbal would now be deputy secretary general and Ayaz Sadiq has been elected to look after party’s financial matters.
Meanwhile, sources inside the party claim that the post of secretary general was left vacant after a dispute arose between the Sharif brothers – Nawaz and Shahbaz – over whether to nominate the ‘pro-establishment’ Sartaj Aziz.
PML-N sources say that Shahbaz appeared keen to have Aziz take on the role, since the 82-year-old veteran politician is known for his ‘cordial’ ties with the military. Nawaz, however, quietly decided to scuttle the nomination after several senior party leaders objected, saying that having such a pro-establishment figure take a prominent role in the party would damage its democratic credentials.
Some party leaders believe that Nawaz may also have feared his brother gaining more influence, and thus wanted to ‘dispel’ such notions.
“These were the things that prompted Mian Sahib (Nawaz) to drop Sartaj Aziz’s nomination…both are very delicate and sensitive matters…he doesn’t want to run any risk,” said a key PML-N leader, interpreting what might have driven elder Sharif in his decision.

Just like Imran Khan says, bander bant.
@Aamir:
Jawed Hashmi could have formed his own faction or gone to PML-Q in early 2000s before eventually going to jail in 2003. But his commitment and determination, and loyalty towards his party are the reasons why he's respected by many people in the present poitical spectrum of Pakistan. Those who admire and respect Hashmi due to his principles include workers and ministers from other political parties too including PTI,JI,PPP and MQM.
Plus, the way he apologized to the nation for being a member of General Zia's cabinet in the past and requested Nawaz Sharif to do the same,is something which's rare in our history.
Quite recently, Jawed Hashmi continues to be absent from talk shows, and meetings and press conferences conducted by PML-N leaders.
@Pashtun: yeah that's why poor are living happily ever after in Pakistan....bus karo ab ye topi drama!
@All BS: Then why is the party named PML Nawaz if it doesn't belong to a particular person or family?
He is the Lifeline of the Party. People vote on HIS name , not on Nisar,Ishaq dar , Javed hashmi & other's names. Just like people vote for PPP on Bhutto's Name!!
wow what a joke as if we did'nt knew why bother with these elections what they want to prove everybody know it is a family oriented party
You can't take away that he is a charismatic leader - and the Facebook, Express Tribune crowd will not make any real difference to the elections.
@Realist. Bro, Sheikh Rasheed did not loose because he left his party. I believe that this is a wrong analogy. Why did the party president Chaudhry Shaujaat not win then? Sheikh Rasheed lost because of other reasons. And if Javed Hashmi joins PTI, there is no pointer that shows that he will loose in the next elections. He is a fair politician, who has neither invited public wrath from his constituency, nor in general. Plus, joining PTI would not harm his image among people, it would rather improve as per opinion polls, and huge public turn-outs at PTI processions.
When NS was not the president officially and unofficially
PML N claims that they are democracy representative but in real they are the representatives of all religious and terrorist groups.
Oh come on....the party's name is pml "N"....hmmmm...i wonder what N stands for...oh Yes, it's Nawaz....oh...and he got elected it's President....how suprising!
In my opinion, Maghdom Javed Hashmi, should lead, PML(N). The reason is Mian Nawaz Sharfi has behaved like a mughal king, he has not presented any solid suggestions for the betterment of Pakistani public. As for as Mr Hashmi is concerned, he has expressed his solid comments about the volatile situation of pakistan, the devastating economy of the country and burning issues of law and order, economy, food prices inflation and youth unemployment. Mian brothers are grooming Hamza Shabaz for the future leadership of PML(N). That looks odd to me. By doing this they are exposed that they promote family politics in the party, even though they always blamed, PML(Q) & PPP about this issue. It would be a great disaster for PML(N), if they will not provide an opportunity for youngsters like Khawaja Saad Rafiq and Mr Khuram Dastgir to come forward and lead from the front, that can provide the peolpe of Pakistan and PML(N) supporters a true leadership. Who always speaks the language of middle class and also represents a middle class.
Elected president after 10 years... Does the 10 year ring any bells? How many years did he promise his saudi masters in the deal with musharraf that he kept on lying about? The pardon from his crimes came with a price! that was his soul.
Pakistani demon-crazy at work, Mashallah.
@All BS: sir can you tell me who was the opponent of nawaz sharief .. now don't say that nobody opposed him.. nobody was allowed to oppose him... whats the greatness in it .. ? when javaid hashmi says that his leader (so called democratic leader) should apologize on his support to zia.ul.haq , your great democratic party's leader say that true person "a made person" is that the democracy of your great party and leaders? hope you would get my point if you have the heart for that
.Nawaz Sharif election to the post of President of PML N reminds me of the referendum of his mentor Zia Ul Haq. Nawaz Sharif was contesting this election against his own self (conscience) and he won by big margin. Well-done, let the conscience sleeps.
@All BS: I wonder if you really know the meanings of the word "proved"
Congrats to the King for such a clean sweep.
He always like to play a fixed match not realizing the fact that this time round every Tom, Dick & Harry is watching the peep show.
Kudos for the death of democracy one more time.
Sartaj Aziz (known as surcharge Aziz), who being Finace Minister frozen the foriegn currency accounts, once again has been selected. But this time PMLN will be rooted out.
Will Nawaz Sharif not die if not selected?
You mean 'Self-Elected'?
Javed Hashmi is a real, great, courageous politician,he should join PPP,the only party, having roots in the poor and downtrodden. He has been winning all his life.In case he joins Imran he is surely gonna loose.
Wow. I NEVER saw that coming.
Same people elected again. We want change in PML-N leadership! As we observed these reelected faces have no proper visiion and political knowledge, prudence, and thinking capacity. They are old man without modern and state of the art guidlaines to run country. Please PML-N change these rulling faces since 20 years! Most importantly Nawaz Sharif, Khosa,Zafr ul Haq.
Another major achievement of our great leader, he has once again proved that he is the most popular leader in Pakistan. This election proves once in for all that PMLN is a truly democratic party and not the Sharif family’s personal fiefdom
I think once again hard times are approaching for 'N' league, because Mr. Javed Hashmi has been selected as Vice President. It would be easier for 'N' league to move him to fill President's vacant seat.
Election or selection ? There seems to have been no voting as all persons were selected and unopposed. What a farce !!
