ATC convicts man of robbery, illegal weapon possession

Separately sentences three others to 10 years’ imprisonment in extortion case

KARACHI: A special anti-terrorism court (ATC) sentenced on Tuesday a man, identified as Yasir, to 16 years of rigourous imprisonment after finding him guilty of robbing a citizen and possessing illegal weapons. The court also ordered him to pay Rs250,000 in fine.

The court order maintained that in case of the non-payment of the fine, the convict would have to serve an additional sentence of 30 months.

According to the police, Yasir, along with an accomplice, had deprived a citizen of Rs 30,000 and a mobile phone. The citizen had chased robbers, who had mugged him while he was travelling in a rickshaw, and then informed the police about their hideout.

Yasir was arrested by police during an alleged encounter, while his accomplice fled the scene. Three cases were registered against Yasir in North Nazimabad Police Station.

Extortion case

Separately, the court sentenced three persons, found guilty in a case of extortion and illegal weapons, to 10 years in jail.

According to the public prosecutor, Iqbal Mayo, the convicts, Hamza, Bilal, and Irfan, had extorted money from a citizen, Noor Alam.

The police had caught the convicts red handed and arrested them, seizing illegal weapons from their possession. According to the police, a case was registered against them in 2018 at Mominabad Police Station.
