COVID-19: Sindh govt launches mobile service to provide ration to needy, daily wagers

CM also urged philanthropists to come forward in these difficult times and help in this cause

Hafeez Tunio March 24, 2020
KARACHI: The Sindh government on Tuesday decided to launch a mobile service in the province to provide ration to the needy and daily wagers affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

"We will dedicate a number for this cause," said Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah during a meeting at CM house.

"Those who need ration can text the number."

The CM also urged philanthropists to come forward in these difficult times and help in the cause.

Coronavirus response: Centre, provinces not on the same page

"I want daily wagers and needy to be helped on priority in this campaign," CM  stressed. "I also want no duplication so that maximum number of people can be helped."

Provincial Ministers Syed Nasir Shah, Saeed Ghani, (via video link), Advisor to Law Murtaza Wahab, Special Assistant  Waqar Mehdi and other party members along with representatives from social welfare organisations were also present during the meeting.

Earlier on March 19, CM Murad ordered the provincial authorities to distribute ration bags to the needy, amid fears about the economic repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic on Sindh’s most vulnerable people.

He said that two million ration bags, consisting of rice, flour, sugar, oil, tea, milk, spices and three types of lentils, would be distributed to those in need.

Army called in to fight pandemic

The CM disclosed that he had already met philanthropists and non-governmental organisations to seek their help and guidance in the matter.

A warehouse is to be established to store the ration bags, while houses will be marked to ensure that everyone receives at least one bag. Furthermore, a helpline will be set up where people can register themselves for these bags; the bags will be supplied after necessary verification.
