Karachi retains Sindh Games trophy

Formidable Karachi region has retained the Mohenjo-Daro trophy with 116 medals at the 13th Sindh Games.

Formidable Karachi region has retained the Mohenjo-Daro trophy with 116 medals at the 13th Sindh Games that concluded in Karachi yesterday.

The host city retained the title with 169 medals in the total of 44 disciplines of the event, while runners up Hyderabad bagged 118 medals and Sukkur ended its run at the games with 73 medals on third position.

Karachi complete tennis double

Karachi completed the tennis double when their men’s team defeated Hyderabad 2-0. Nomi Qamar beat Saad Baloch without any trouble. After losing the first set 6-1, Saad conceded the match without appearing in the second set. Like the first match, Danish Ahmed defeated Omer Kazi and the latter retired after losing the opening set 7-5. Larkana took the bronze medal. Earlier Karachi ladies beat Mirpurkhas 2-0 to bag the women gold with Hyderabad bagging bronze.

Hockey gold for Karachi

Karachi men and women won gold medals in the hockey competition at the Hockey Club of Pakistan. Shabbir Hussain scored four goals, including a hat-trick, as Karachi men thumped Larkana 7-0. Their women’s side beat Hyderabad 4-2 on penalty strokes to get the gold medal.

Sukkur grab Kabaddi gold

Sukkur captured the gold medal in Kabbadi event by beating Larkana 36-20 in the final at SSBA Arena. Nazim Riaz Jatt, who played smartly in the contest on Tuesday with teammate Ikhtiar Kalhro, played an important role in his team getting the gold. Asghar Chouhan was the best player for Larkana. Hyderabad took the bronze after an exciting 20-16 win over Mirpurkhas.

Masud captures Bridge gold medal

Former Pakistan captain Masud Mazhar won the individual Bridge title by scoring 67.01 per cent at the Aslam Bridge Hall. Ghulam Muhammad with 65.31 per cent secured the silver medal and Ahmed Hasan won the bronze medal with 62.93 per cent. Earlier, Raza Naqvi and Anwar Kemal with 60.88 per cent  won the gold as Karachi made the clean-sweep by taking all six medals at offer in the event.

Organisers hail athletes

“The concept of Sindh Games was introduced to support the athletes who participate in the Olympic sports,” Karachi region organiser and Sindh Olympic Association athletics manager Mohammad Imran Khan told The Express Tribune.

“Through this event the athletes from interior Sindh and even from Karachi get to show their potential and create records because unlike hockey and football, Olympic sports event do not take place throughout the year.”

Karachi’s Almas Ibrahim and swimmer Javed Taqi were declared the best female and male athletes of the event after winning seven gold medals each. The two-time best female athlete Ibrahim said that her win at the 13th Sindh Games has inspired her to aim for national events as well.
