LAHORE:

The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) on Sunday cancelled its entry test for admission to BSc Engineering courses after learning that the question paper had been leaked.

Lt Gen (retired) Muhammad Akram, the UET vice chancellor, who had earlier denied the leak reports, announced the cancellation of the paper after the tests had been given.

UET spokesman Dr Tanveer Qasim said that the VC had constituted a three-member committee to investigate the matter. The committee members are Dr Muhammad Ali, the Computer Sciences chairman; Dr Muhammad Akram, the research director general; and the Electrical Engineering Department head Dr Zubair A Khan. The committee will brief the VC on its progress on daily basis, Dr Qasim said.

Governor Sardar Latif Khan Khosa has sought an explanation from the UET administration on the issue by next week, he said.

Some 41,000 students took the entry test at Lahore, Multan and Taxila campuses of the UET. No new date for the entry test has been announced yet.

Talking to The Express Tribune, the VC said, “This will not delay the admissions as intermediate results are not expected until August 25. We will have given them a test by then.”

Some faculty members The Tribune talked to said that this was the first time something of this sort had happened at UET.  They demanded a strong and immediate action against those involved.

Around 14,000 students appeared for the test at the Lahore centre. A candidate claimed that before the test started, some candidates were seen with blue sheets, which he said, had all the questions that later appeared in the entry test question paper. He said those candidates told them that the sheets were obtained at Rs100,000 each.
